Concept explainers
Interpretation: Bond-line formulae for the given condensed structural formulae are to be written.
Concept Introduction:
For drawing bond line formulae, the following rules are followed.
A bond is represented by a line.
The bends in aline indicate carbon atoms, unless any other group is shown specifically.
The number of hydrogen atoms bonded to each carbon is equal to the remaining valency of carbon.
Any element other than carbon or hydrogen is indicated by its symbol.
The hydrogen atoms bonded to elements other than carbon are shown by writing the symbol.

- Linoleic acid (below) is an essential fatty acid found in many vegetable oils, such as soy, peanut, and cottonseed. A key structural feature of the molecule is the cis orientation around its two double bonds, where R1 and R2 represent two different groups that form the rest of the molecule. R, CH2 `H H' (a) How many different compounds are possible, changing only the cis/trans arrangements around these two double bonds? (b) How many are possible for a similar compound with three double bonds? R3. .CH2 R4 `H H `H H'arrow_forwardClassify each of he following hydrocarbons as alkanes, alkenes, or alkynes. (a) C6H14 (b) C3H4 (c) C9H18arrow_forwardThis question is about the chemistry of alkenes, which are unsaturated hydrocarbons. (a) State what is meant by the term unsaturated as applied to a hydrocarbon. (1) (b) An organic compound, X, is an unsaturated hydrocarbon with molecular formula CH₂.
