As a test of orienteering skills, your physics class holds a contest in a large, open field. Each contestant is told to travel 20.8 m due north from the starting point, then 38.0 m due cast, and finally 18.0 m in the direction 33.0° west of south. After the specified displacements, a contestant will find a silver dollar hidden under a rock. The winner is the person who takes the shortest time to reach the location of the silver dollar. Remembering what you learned in class, you run on a straight line from the starting point to the hidden coin. How far and in what direction do you run?

- In an attempt to escape a desert island, a castaway builds a raft and sets out to sea. The wind shifts a great deal during the day and he is blown along the following directions: 2.50 km and 45.0 north of west, then 4.70 km and 60.0 south of east, then 1.30 km and 25.0 south of west, then 5.10 km straight east, then 1.70 km and 5.00 east of north, then 7.20 km and 55.0 south of west, and finally 2.80 km and 10.0 north of east. She follows a passage 180 mstraight west, then 210 m in a direction 45 ̊ east of south, and then 280 m at 30 ̊ east of north. After a fourth unmeasured displacement, she finds herself back where she started. Draw thediagram following her path, then solve for the magnitude and direction of the fourthdisplacement. You may also try drawing a scale diagram of the given vectors using your ruler andprotractor, then measure the fourth displacement to check your quantitative answer.arrow_forwardKHW 01 - Vectors Item 7 As a test of orienting skills, your physics class holds a contest in a large, open field. - A diver explores a shallow reef off the coast of Belize. She initially swims d1 = 74.3 m north, makes a turn to the east and continues for d2 = 183.7 m, then follows a big grouper (a kind of fish) for d3 = 73.3 m in the direction θ = 43.9° north of east. The race is made up of three different events that involve a swim, a climb, and a zip line. You begin at point S. The finish is at point F, which is 200m from S in a direction 65° north of west. The first part of the race is a 600m swim to an island, B, due west of S. The second part is a climb up a vertical cliff to point C. Point C is at an angle of elevation of 10°, as seen from point S. The third part is a zip down a zip line from point C to the finish at point F. You can swim at 1.5m/s, climb at 0.75m/s, and zip at 15m/s.
