Introduction: Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is a Federal law that established national standards for electronic exchange of protected health information. HIPAA is a Federal law passed by the government that protects and regulates patient privacy with respect to sharing of patient information through electronic means. The patient must be informed of the rights related to release of their information and written formal consent must be obtained from the patient by the healthcare worker before sharing them. The healthcare worker has no right to share the patient information without the patient’s consent.
