Concept explainers
In an experiment examining vitamin C as a cold treatment, students with cold symptoms who visited the campus medical center either received vitamin C or were treated with over-the-counter drugs. Students then reported on the length and severity of their colds. Both the students and the clinic health providers knew which treatment students were receiving. This study indicated that vitamin C significantly reduced the length and severity of colds. Which factors make this result somewhat unreliable?

- Match the body temperature control item to the appropriate location in the negative feedback loop. Effector when variable is low Effector when variable is high Control center Sensor Controlled variable A. Muscles for shivering and goosebumps B. Nerves in skin C. Brain D. Sweat glands E. Temperaturearrow_forwardWhich of the following are examples of maintaining homeostasis (more than one answer may be correct)? a. You develop diarrhea in response to contracting norovirus b. Sweating due to eating spicy food c. Kidneys removing excess fluid through urine d. Insulin is released in response to high blood sugar, causing cells to use more sugararrow_forwardAfter a long, hot run together, your friend tells you that you should dunk your head into a cooler of water to lower your body temperature more rapidly, rather than sitting and waiting to cool down. What do you think? Form a hypothesis, about how the ice-cold water might affect the rate at which your body temperature returns to normal. How could you test your hypothesis? Explain your answer.arrow_forward
- In mammals, body temperature is controlled by a structure in the brain called the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus is able to sense even slight variations in body temperature. This structure is responsible for bodily responses that include thirst, the activation of sweat glands, and the dilation of blood vessels near the skin. Each of these mechanisms works to restore body temperature to a normal range.arrow_forwardThe part of the homeostatic control mechanism that brings about change is the ____________ control center. stimulus. effector. receptor.arrow_forward(a)What are the stimuli in the picture? (b) What is our body’s response when the temperature of our body decreases? When it increases?arrow_forward
- The Siamese cat pictured is called a “seal point” because it has seal-colored (dark brown) extremities. Some Siamese cats show the same color pattern, but the dark areas are of a lighter color or even a different shade—for example, lilac point, red point, blue point. What results would you predict if the experiments described in the text (shaving the cat and then increasing or decreasing temperature) were conducted on cats with these color patterns?arrow_forwardIn the negative feedback system for regulation of body temperature. Identify the following. 1. Stimulus 2. Receptor 3. Control Center 4. Effector 5. Responsearrow_forwardWhy is putting on a coat not an example of homeostasis? What is an example of homeostasis if your body is cold?arrow_forward
- The "cause" for something to happen is called: A. Response B. Effect C. Homeostasis D. Stimulusarrow_forwardA study of the effects of vitamin D in the body has shown that persons with lower levels of vitamin D are more likely to have chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, breast cancer, colds, and flu. Can you conclude that vitamin D prevents these chronic diseases? What other possible explanations for this correlation can you suggest?arrow_forwardHow is a condition such as diabetes a good example of the failure of a set point in humans?arrow_forward
