Concept explainers
Much of the research on common cold prevention and treatment is performed by scientists employed or funded by drug companies. Often these companies do not allow scientists to publish the results of their research for fear that competitors at other drug companies will use this research to develop a new drug before they do. Should our society allow scientific research to be owned and controlled by private companies?

- Why do scientists design experiments to disprove the hypothesis they are testing instead of trying to prove that the hypothesis is correct?arrow_forwardA researcher collects information regarding the relationship of drinking orange juice and preventing the common cold. Which method would best assist the researcher in reaching a conclusion? A) Drink orange juice when a cold is coming on B) Conduct a survey of those who drink orange juice to prevent a cold C) Analyze the research data found in the scientific journals D) Review the chemical composition of orange juicearrow_forwardSome people suffer terribly from certain incurable diseases. Can scientific methods be used to develop drugs that could end a person’s life? Can scientific methods be used to decide whether it is right or wrong to use such drugs?arrow_forward
- Due to advances in medicine people are living longer? Do you think that this is potentially problematic for the earth as medicine becomes even more effective at prolonging human life? Why or why not?arrow_forwardConsider the following questions and determine whether they can be answered scientifically. Explain why. Can Zinc shorten the length of the common cold? Can pollen cause an allergic reaction? What does it me to moral? Should Genetically Modified Foods be banned?arrow_forwardThe medical imaging technology magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is used in hospitals and radiology clinics. MRI creates detailed images of the organs and tissues within the body using a powerful magnetic field and radio waves. 1)Even when the MRI machine is not in use, MRI system operators make sure not to bring any metallic objects into the room where the machine is housed. Why? And what happens if a magnet is heated?Elaborate your answerarrow_forward

(explain your reasoning).arrow_forwardYou have learned the process of the Scientific Method since elementary school science lessons. How does the development of new research tools, such as aerial drones and stable isotope analysis, affect the process of science?arrow_forwardIs it possible to conduct an experiment without following the scientific method?arrow_forward
- Which of the following is not true of science?a. Science is based on the premise that all events can be traced to natural causes.b. Important science can be based on chance observations.c. A hypothesis is basically a wild guess.d. Scientific theories can potentially be disproved.arrow_forwardA key result of the pandemic has been the increased scrutiny of scientific research by a broader and, in some cases, a less experienced audience, resulting in significant discussions about the basic tenets of scientific theory and discovery. How would you help people understand the enduring value of experimental science to our society for effectively addressing challenging human health problems?arrow_forwardWhy are controls needed when conducting scientific experiments?arrow_forward
