I. Hospital Administration
Southwest Hospital has an operating room used only for laser eye surgery. The annual cost of rent, heat and electricity for the operating room and its equipment is $1.08 million, and the annual salaries of the people who staff this room total $1.6 million.
The cost for each surgery is $2395, which includes all medical supplies and drugs and a complimentary bouquet of flowers for each patient. In addition, one-quarter of the patients require dark glasses that the hospital provides at no additional charge but cost $20 per pair. The hospital receives a payment of 56000 for each eye operation performed.
Southwest Hospital currently averages 70 laser eye operations per month. One of the nurses has just learned about a machine that would reduce by 5100 per patient the amount of medical supplies needed. It can be leased for 5100.000 annually. Keeping in mind the financial cost and benefits, advise the hospital on whether it should lease this machine.

- What is the total effect on the economy of a government tax rebate of $1,000 to each household in order to stimulate the economy if each household will spend 90% of the rebate in goods and services?arrow_forwardIf during the following year it is predicted that each comedy skit will generate 30 thousand and each musical number 20 thousand, find the maximum income for the year. A television program director must schedule comedy skits and musical numbers for prime-time variety shows. Each comedy skit requires 2 hours of rehearsal time, costs 3000, and brings in 20,000 from the shows sponsors. Each musical number requires 1 hour of rehearsal time, costs 6000, and generates 12,000. If 250 hours are available for rehearsal and 600,000 is budgeted for comedy and music, how many segments of each type should be produced to maximize income? Find the maximum income.arrow_forwardA Toot can be made in 30 minutes and has a feather attached to it. A Wheet requires 15 minutes, has two feathers, and is sprinkled with 0.5 oz of sequin powder. A Honk requires 30 minutes, has three feathers, and one oz. of sequin powder. The net profit is $0.40 per Toot, $0.50 per Wheet, and $0.80 per Honk. The following resources are available: 80 hrs of labor, 360 feathers, and 90 oz. of sequin powder. Determine the quantity of each type of noisemaker that maximizes profit.arrow_forward
- Suppose you spend $12 a week on snacks. Nearly one-quarter of a million children worldwide die each year from measles. The vaccination to prevent measles costs about one dollar per child. If you donated half your snack money for one year to a charity that paid for these immunizations, how many children might be immunized from the measles with your money?arrow_forwardA contractor, Susan Meyer, has to haul gravel to three building sites. She can purchase as much as 18 tons at a gravel pit in the north of the city and 14 tons at one in the south. She needs 10, 5, and 10 tons at sites 1, 2, and 3, respectively. The purchase price per ton at each gravel pit and the hauling cost per ton are given in the table below. Susan wishes to determine how much to haul from each pit to each site to minimize the total cost for purchasing and hauling gravel. Hauling Cost per Ton at Site Pit 1 3 Price per Ton North $30 $60 $50 $100 South $60 $30 $40 $120 Now suppose that trucks (and their drivers) need to be hired to do the hauling, where each truck can only be used to haul gravel from a single pit to a single site. Each truck can haul 5 tons, and the cost per truck is five times the hauling cost per ton given above. Only full trucks would be used to supply each site. a.
