Concept explainers
It is likely that others beside Anton van Leeuwenhoek were using lenses to look at microorganisms. After all, Robert Hooke had developed and used the compound microscope in about 1665, and the first letter from van Leeuwenhoek to the Royal Society of London was written in 1673. Why is it that we know about the observations of van Leeuwenhoek and not others? What reasons can you give for why it is important for scientists to publish the results of their research?

- If you visit a lake in the middle of the Amazon and take water samples to analyze under a microscope from a nearby university that has good instrumentation and there you detect microorganisms that are not visible to the naked eye. What studies would you do to determine if they are bacteria, archaea, fungi or protozoa? Explain each type of analysis and how would you rule out members of each group? Many people in the small Midwestern town of Hootville are stricken with the disease“BUGGO". Many of those who become ill recover within 7-10 days Through intensive study, “BUGGO” is now believed to be caused by a bacterium (single for bacteria) called "Gotcha." In their fight against “BUGGO”, a new drug X , has been shown to kill the GOTCHA bacteria which was grown in a test tube. Drug X was tested on dogs and found to cure those stricken with “BUGGO”. Researchers decided to test the new drug on some of the people in Hootville. They thought that the drug would also kill “GOTCHA” in humans. They decided that if given drug X that the people would recover faster than those who didn’t receive it. The researchers prepared 2 kinds of tablets that were identical in every way except that one group of tablets contained drug X and the other group did not. The…arrow_forward
