Magnesium chloride is an important coagulant used in the preparation of tofu from soy milk. Its solubility in water at 20°C is 54.6 g/100 g. At 80°C, its solubility is 66.1 g/100 g. A mixture is made up of 16.2 g of magnesium chloride and 38.2 g of water at 20°C.
(a) Is the mixture homogeneous? If it is, how many more grams of magnesium chloride are required to make a saturated solution? If the mixture is not homogeneous, how many grams of magnesium chloride are undissolved?
(b) How many more grams of magnesium chloride are needed to make a saturated solution at 80°C?

- Some ice cubes are homogeneous and some are heterogeneous. Into which group do ice cubes from your home refrigerator fall? If homogeneous ice cubes are floating on water in a glass, are the contents of the glass homogeneous or heterogeneous? Justify both answers.arrow_forwardElectrical energy is measured in kilowatt hours, kWH. A watt is 1 joule per second, a kilowatt is 1000 joules per second. An hour has 3600 seconds, therefore 1kWh=3.6x10^6 joules. How many kWh are there in a meal that is 437 Cal?arrow_forwardWhich of the following is a physical property? Which of the following items is a pure substance? What is the value of 98 °F in units of °C? Convert 68852 millijoules into Calories. (Write your answer in the decimal form? When table salt is placed in water and stirred it dissolves and a clear liquid is obtained. This process is a: Some groceries are placed in a deep freezer that is set at 18 oF. What is this temperature in Celsius? Thermal energy is: Which of the following statements is true about a compound? How many joules are there in a 255 Calorie snack bar? Which of the following is a physical property? If the monthly electricity consumption of a household is 6,619 kWh, what is this consumption expressed in kJ? Which of the following items is a chemical property? If you hold a solid piece of pure gallium metal in your hand, your body heat will melt the gallium into its liquid form. This illustrates which of the following? On a cold day the atmospheric…arrow_forward
- What is the volume, in cubic centimeters (cm^3) of 1.00 kilograms of gold?arrow_forwardThe solubility of potassium chromate is 65.7 g per 100 g of water. In an experiment , a student had 762 mL of water available. What mass of potassium chromate, in grams, could be dissolved in that water?arrow_forwardYou are to give ampicillin, with a recommended dose of 45 mg/kg, to a child with a mass of 24 kg. If stock on hand is 250 mg/capsule, how many capsules should be given? Express the number of capsules as an integer.arrow_forward
- International computer communications are often carried by optical fibers incables laid along the ocean floor. If one strand of optical fiber weighs 1.19X.10³lb/m,what is the mass (in kg) of a cable made of six strands of optical fiber, each long enough to link New York and Paris (8.84X.10³km)?arrow_forwardHow can I solve a multidimensional analysis problem involving unit conversions for chemistry? 5.1 x 103 J/m2 to MJ/mm2arrow_forwardYeast converts glucose to ethanol and carbon dioxide during anaerobic fermentation as depicted in the simplechemical equation here:glucose ⟶ ethanol + carbon dioxide(a) If 200.0 g of glucose is fully converted, what will be the total mass of ethanol and carbon dioxide produced?(b) If the fermentation is carried out in an open container, would you expect the mass of the container and contents after fermentation to be less than, greater than, or the same as the mass of the container and contents before fermentation? Explain.(c) If 97.7 g of carbon dioxide is produced, what mass of ethanol is produced?arrow_forward
- Wine is often bottled in 0.750 L containers. Using the appropriate equivalence statement from Table 2.7 in your book, calculate the volume of such a wine bottle in quarts. Racing cars at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway now routinely travel around the track at an average speed of 225 mi/h. What is this speed in kilometers per hour? Los Angeles and Honolulu are 2588 mi apart. What is this distance in kilometers? The United states has high-speed trains running between Boston and New York capable of speeds up to 160 mi/h. Are these trains faster or slower than the fastest trains in the United Kingdom, which reach speeds of 225 km/h?arrow_forwardTo aid in the prevention of tooth decay, it is recommended that drinking water contain 0.900 ppm fluoride, F−. How many grams of F− must be added to a cylindrical water reservoir having a diameter of 4.12×10^2 m and a depth of 76.72 m?arrow_forwardA solution is prepared by dissolving table salt, sodium chloride, in water at room temperature. a Assuming there is no significant change in the volume of water during the preparation of the solution, how would the density of the solution compare to that of pure water? b If you were to boil the solution for several minutes and then allow it to cool to room temperature, how would the density of the solution compare to the density in part a? c If you took the solution prepared in part a and added more water, how would this affect the density of the solution?arrow_forward
