Answer to Problem 59P

The final location of the car relative to the origin is 2.3km34°northofeast

Explanation of Solution

Write the first displacement of the car in vector notation by considering East as positive x coordinate and North as positive y coordinate.

A=Axcosθi^+Ajcosθj^

Here, A is the first displacement of the car, θ is the angle measured with respect to x axis, Ax and Ay are the displacement along x  and y axis respectively.

Write the second displacement of the car in vector notation.

 B=Bxcosθi^+Bjsinθj^

Here, B is the first displacement of the car, θ is the angle measured with respect to x axis, Bx and By are the displacement along x  and y axis respectively.

Write the expression to find the distance of the car relative to origin.

    C=Cx2+Cy2        (I)

Here, C is the final distance of the car relative to origin, Cx is the final distance car moved from the origin along x , and Cy is the final distance car moved from the origin along y.

Write the net displacement along x and y  axis.

Cx=Axcosθ+Bxcosθ        (II)

Cy=Aysinθ+Bysinθ        (III)

Write the expression to find the angle.

    θ=tan1(CyCx)        (IV)

Conclusion:

Substitute 0 for Ax, 3.1km for Ay, and 53° for θ in (II) to find Cx

    Cx=(0)+(3.1km)cos(53°)=1.9km

Substitute 1.2km for Ax, 3.1km for Ay, 90° for θ, and 53° for θ in (III) to find Cy

    Cy=(1.2km)sin(90°)+(3.1km)sin(53°)=1.3km

Substitute 1.9km for Cx and 1.3km for Cy in (I).

    C=(1.9km)2+(1.3km)2=2.3km

Substitute 1.9km for Cx and 1.3km for Cy in (IV) to find θ

    θ=tan1(1.3km1.9km)=34°

Therefore, the final location of the car relative to the origin is 2.3km34°northofeast
