In 2005, researcher Woo-suk Hwang reported that he had made immortal stem cells from human patients. His research was hailed as a breakthrough for people affected by degenerative diseases, because stem cells may be used to repair a person's own damaged tissues. Hwang published his results in a peer-reviewed journal. In 2006, the journal retracted his paper after other scientists discovered that Hwang's group had faked their data. Does the incident show that results of scientific studies cannot be trusted? Or does it confirm the usefulness of a scientific approach, because other scientists discovered and exposed the fraud?

- In your opinion, was it unethical for researchers to take Henrietta Lacks' cells without her permission? Why or why not? Do you think it is unethical that biotech/pharmaceutical companies are currently profitting from Henrietta Lacks' cells? Why or why not?arrow_forwardThe Study of Life discusses themes in biology, how life is organized, the types of cellular life forms, evolution, and the process of scientific thinking. In this post, you will demonstrate an understanding of you've learned about the themes in biology, how life is organized, the types of cellular life forms, evolution, and the process of scientific thinking.arrow_forwardA team of researchers is interested in testing the amount of oxygen gas (O2) produced when the same species of plant is exposed to different colors of visible light. The research team has developed a hypothesis to test and designed experimental conditions to run. They have submitted the work to you for feedback and approval. Your job is to provide feedback concerning both the hypothesis and the experimental design. This will enable them to make the necessary changes to obtain approval for their research. The Team’s Hypothesis: The levels of oxygen gas will be higher for plants exposed to visible red light. How would you improve the hypothesis while also putting it into a proper hypothesis with an IF and THEN statement?arrow_forward
- Antibiotics are a form of medicine used to treat bacterial infections. However, new bacteria are evolving that are resistant to antibiotics. When someone uses antibiotics, they often contribute in a small way to an increase in the number of bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics. How would an economist classify antibiotic use? Public health officials are concerned with the overuse of antibiotics, which leads to bacteria being resistant to antibiotics. What is a solution to this problem?arrow_forwardIn not less than 200 words. Discuss why scientist is excited about human embryonic and adult stem cell.arrow_forwardA genetic technology firm wants to collaborate with your team by offering their latest genetic technology advancement, which consists of using eukaryotic cells that have the ability to take up and digest oil components. Describe the advantages and disadvantages of using eukaryotic cells for cleaning oil spills.arrow_forward

- Genomes are the shared genetic information among all living cells on Earth. the sum of genetic information in a cell. usually made of RNA. only found in animal and plant cells. made of proteins.arrow_forwardBus #2: You head into a stem cell. Ms. Frizzle points out that there is a drug in this cell that appears to interfere with mitosis. In other words, it takes longer than usual for the cell to finish mitosis. She says, "this drug could be doing any number of things. Propose one GOOD working hypothesis, a GOOD null hypothesis, and a WELL-DESIGNED experiment to test your working hypothesis."arrow_forwardIn the new paradigm, biology is a science based on three levels of molecular information: Biology is a science of information: starting from discovery of DNA and the genetic code, now biologists study how that information is stored, how it is used, and how it evolves. Biologists can take advantage of the same molecular tools to analyze different biological systems, comparing and contrasting the details of information storage and processing that information. Level 1. genetic information is encoded in DNA. Level 2. Biological information is embodied in proteins. What is Level 3? _______________________________ Give your explanation. ____________________________________arrow_forward
