Concept explainers
During a medical operation an anesthesiologist controls the depth of unconsciousness by controlling the concentration of isoflurane in a vaporized mixture with oxygen and nitrous oxide. The depth of anesthesia is measured by the patient's blood pressure. The anesthesiologist also regulates ventilation, fluid balance, and the administration of other drugs. In order to free the anesthesiologist to devote more time to the latter tasks, and in the interest of the patient’s safety, we wish to automate the depth of anesthesia by automating the control of isoflurane concentration. Draw a f unctional block diagram of the system showing pertinent signals and subsystems (Meier. 1992). (Section 1.4: Introduction to a Case Study]

- One end of a tube of unknown radius is immersed to a depth of 15 mm in water and an air bubble is blown at the end of this tube. The maximum air pressure measured is 200 Pa. The same procedure is carried out in a liquid and the maximum air pressure recorded in 150 Pa. Determine the surface tension of the liquid. The fluid is normally continuous between the cranial and spinal cavities and exerts a pressure of 100 to 200 mm of H2O above the prevailing atmospheric pressure. In medical work, pressures are often measured in units of mm of H2O because body fluids, including the cerebrospinal fluid, typically have nearly the same density as water. The pressure of the cerebrospinal fluid can be measured by means of a spinal tap. A hollow tube is inserted into the spinal column, and the height to which the fluid rises is observed, as shown in the figure below. If the fluid rises to a height of 150 mm, we write its gauge pressure as 150 mm H2O. A patient lies sideways while a surgeon tries to insert a hollow tube into his spinal cord. (a) Express this pressure in pascals, in atmospheres, and in millimeters of mercury. The rise of heated (and thus less dense) water to the surface is prevented by adding salt at the pond bottom. In a typical salt gradient solar pond, the density of water increases in the gradient zone, as shown, and the density can be expressed as ρ = ρ0√1 + tan2(?/ 4 s/ H) where ? 0 is the density on the water surface, s is the vertical distance measured downward from the top of the gradient zone (s = −z), and H is the thickness of the gradient zone. For H = 4 m, ?0 = 1040 kg/m3, and a thickness of 0.8 m for the surface zone, calculate the gage pressure at the bottom of the gradient zone.arrow_forwardA student struggled with his first midterm exam and is slightly angry. - Principle of Linear Impulse and Momentum for a System of Particles To apply the principle of linear impulse and momentum to a system of particles. Integrating the equation of motion, as applied to all particles in a system, yields ∑mi(vi)1+∑∫t2t1Fidt=∑mi(vi)2 where mi is the ith particle's mass, vi is the ith particle's velocity, and Fi is the external force that acts on the ith particle. This relationship states that the sum of the initial linear momenta, at time t1, and the impulses of all the external forces acting between times t1 and t2 is equal to the sum of the linear momenta of the system, at time t2. If the system has a mass center, G, the expression becomes m(vG)1+∑∫t2t1Fidt=m(vG)2 This expression allows the principle of linear impulse and momentum to be applied to a system of particles that is represented as a single particle. Two blocks, each of mass m = 6.90 kg , are connected by a massless rope and start sliding down a slope of incline θ = 36.0 ∘ at t=0.000 s.
