Why the Discrepancy? A Gallup poll was taken two years before a presidential election, and it showed that Hillary Clinton was preferred by about 50% more voters than Barack Obama. The subjects in the Gallup poll were randomly selected and surveyed by telephone. An America OnLine (AOL) poll was conducted at the same time as the Gallup poll, and it showed that Barack Obama was preferred by about twice as many respondents as Hillary Clinton. In the AOL poll, Internet users responded to voting choices that were posted on the AOL site. How can the large discrepancy between the two polls be explained? Which poll is more likely to reflect the true opinions of American voters at the time of the poll?
