Chapter 10, Problem 10.101CP
Summary Introduction
To determine:
The structure of cholesterol ester produced.
Introduction:
Cholesterol ester is an ester of cholesterol which is a dietary lipid. The formation of ester bond takes place between carboxylate group of a fatty acid and the hydroxyl group of cholesterol by the removal of water molecule through esterification reaction. In an esterification reaction, an alcohol reacts with a carboxylic acid to form fruity smell compounds that are known as esters.
An ester bond is formed by the condensation reaction of an acid and an alcohol.
Condensation reactions are defined as the reaction in which two or more monomers combine together to form a single molecule with the elimination of small molecules like water.
