In 2018, Starsearch Corporation began work on three research and development projects. One of the projects was completed and commercial production of the developed product began in December. The company’s fiscal year-end is December 31. All of the following 2016 expenditures were included in the R&D expense account:
Salaries and wages for:
Lab research | $ 300,000 |
Design and construction of preproduction prototype | 160,000 |
Quality control during commercial production | 20,000 |
Materials and supplies consumed for:
Lab research | 60,000 |
Construction of preproduction prototype | 30,000 |
Purchase of equipment | 600,000 |
Patent filing and legal fees for completed project | 40,000 |
Payments to others for research | 120,000 |
Total | $1,330,000 |
$200,000 of equipment was purchased solely for use in one of the projects. After the project is completed, the equipment will be abandoned. The remaining $400,000 in equipment will be used on future R&D projects. The useful life of equipment is five years. Assume that all of the equipment was acquired at the beginning of the year.

- Problem 14-46 (Static) Equipment Replacement and Performance Measures (LO 14-2) Oscar Clemente is the manager of Forbes Division of Pitt, Inc., a manufacturer of biotech products. Forbes Division, which has $4 million in assets, manufactures a special testing device. At the beginning of the current year, Forbes invested $5 million in automated equipment for test machine assembly. The division's expected income statement at the beginning of the year was as follows. Sales revenue $ 16,000,000 Operating costs Variable 2,000,000 Fixed (all cash) 7,500,000 Depreciation New equipment 1,500,000 Other 1,250,000 Division operating profit $ 3,750,000 A sales representative from LSI Machine Company approached Oscar in October. LSI has for $6.5 million a new assembly machine that offers significant improvements over the equipment Oscar bought at the beginning of the year. The new equipment would expand…arrow_forward21 Beck Construction Company began work on a new building project on January 1, 2023. The project is to be completed by December 31, 2025, for a fixed price of $131 million. The following are the actual costs incurred and estimates of remaining costs to complete the project that were made by Beck's accounting staff: Years Actual costs incurred in each year Estimated remaining costs to complete the project (measured atDecember 31 of each year) 2023 $ 36 million $ 72 million 2024 $ 57 million $ 57 million 2025 $ 41 million $ 0 million Required: What amount of gross profit (or loss) would Beck record on this project in each year, assuming that Beck recognizes revenue for this project upon completion of the project?arrow_forwardCapital expenditures budget On January 1, 2016, the controller of Omicron Inc. is planning capital expenditures for the years 2016-2019. The following interviews helped the controller collect the necessary information for the capital expenditures budget: Director of Facilities: A construction contract was signed in late 2015 for the construction of a new factory building at a contract cost of 10,000,000. The construction is scheduled to begin in 2016 and be completed in 2017. Vice President of Manufacturing: Once the new factory building is finished, we plan to purchase 1 .5 million in equipment in late 2017. I expect that an additional 200,000 will be needed early in the following year (2018) to test and install the equipment before we can begin production. If sales continue to grow, I expect we'll need to invest another 1,000,000 in equipment in 2019. Chief Operating Officer: We have really been growing lately. I wouldn't be surprised if we need to expand the size of our new factory building in 2019 by at least 35%. Fortunately, we expect inflation to have minimal impact on construction costs over the next four years. Additionally, I would expect the cost of the expansion to be proportional to the size of the expansion. Director of Information Systems: We need to upgrade our information systems to wireless network technology. It doesn't make sense to do this until after the new factory building is completed and producing product. During 2018, once the factory is up and running, we should equip the whole facility with wireless technology. I think it would cost us 800,000 today to install the technology. However, prices have been dropping by 25% per year, so it should be less expensive at a later date. Chief Financial Officer: I am excited about our long-term prospects. My only short-term concern is managing our cash flow while we expend the 4,000,000 of construction costs on the portion of the new factory building scheduled to be completed in 2016. Use this interview information to prepare a capital expenditures budget for Omicron Inc. for the years 2016-2019.arrow_forward
- Exercise 10-26 (Algo) Research and development [LO10-8] In 2021, Space Technology Company modified its model Z2 satellite to incorporate a new communication device. The company made the following expenditures: Basic research to develop the technology Engineering design work Development of a prototype device Acquisition of equipment Testing and modification of the prototype Legal and other fees for patent application on the new communication system Legal fees for successful defense of the new patent Total The equipment will be used on this and other research projects. Depreciation on the equipment for 2021 is $30,000. During your year-end review of the accounts related to intangibles, you discover that the company has capitalized all of the above as costs of the patent. Management contends that the device simply represents an improvement of the existing communication system of the satellite and, therefore, should be capitalized. The sprayer's base price is $1,140,000, and it would cost another $23,500 to install it. The machine falls into the MACRS 3-year class (the applicable MACRS depreciation rates are 33.33%, 44.45%, 14.81%, and 7.41%), and it would be sold after 3 years for $547,000. The machine would require an increase in net working capital (inventory) of $15,500. The sprayer would not change revenues, but it is expected to save the firm $381,000 per year in before-tax operating costs, mainly labor. Campbell's marginal tax rate is 30%.
