Chapter 10, Problem 10.1CP
February 1998 saw the failure of the earthen dam impounding California Jim’s Pond in southern Rhode Island. The resulting flood raised temporary havoc in the nearby village of Peace Dale. The pond is 17 acres in area and 15 ft deep and was full from heavy rains. The breach in the dam was 22 ft wide and 15 ft deep. Estimate the time required for the pond to drain to a depth of 2 ft.

A rectangular weir having a length of one meter is constructed at one end of a tank having a square section 20 x 20m and a height 10m. If the initial head on the weir is 1m, determine the time required to discharge a volume of 72 cu.m.
Water is to be transported in an unfinished-concrete rectangular channel with a bottom width of 4 ft at a rate of 51 ft3/s. The terrain is such that the channel bottom drops 2 ft per 1000 ft length. Determine the minimum height of the channel under uniform-flow conditions. What would your answer be if the bottom drop is just 1 ft per 1000 ft length?
In flowing from section (1) to section (2) along a rectangular open channel, the water depth decreases by a factor of three and the Froude number changes from a subcritical value of 0.7 to a supercritical value of 3.4. Determine the channel width at (2) if it is 8 ft. wide at section (1). Assume stead-state flow.
