You are designing a slide for a water park. In a sitting position, park guests slide a vertical distance h down the water-slide, which has negligible friction. When they reach the bottom of the slide, they grab a handle at the bottom end of a 6.00-m-long uniform pole. The pole hangs vertically, initially at rest. The upper end of the pole is pivoted about a stationary, frictionless axle. The pole with a person hanging on the end swings up through an angle of 72.0°, and then the person lets go of the pole and drops into a pool of water. Treat the person as a point mass. The pole’s moment of inertia is given by

- The wheels, axle, and handles of a wheelbarrow weigh W = 57 N. The load chamber and its contents weigh W₁ = 563 N. The drawing shows these two forces in two different wheelbarrow designs. To support the wheelbarrow in equilibrium, the man's hands apply a force to the handles that is directed vertically upward. Consider a rotational axis at the point where the tire contacts the ground, directed perpendicular to the plane of the paper. Find the magnitude of the man's force for both designs. You are attempting to slide it along the floor by pushing horizontally on the side of the refrigerator. The coefficient of static friction between the floor and the refrigerator is 0.300. A massless cord wrapped around the wheel is attached to a block of 4.16 kg that slides on a horizontal frictionless surface. If a horizontal force P with a magnitude of 10.1 N is applied to the block as shown below. If the wheel and block start at rest, and the block is moved through a displacement of 2.60 m what is the final angular velocity of the wheel in rad/s, assuming the cord does not slip. Parrow_forward
- The top edge of a thin rectangular metal plate with a mass of 2.60 kg is attached to a horizontal rod parallel to the edge of the plate. The plate hangs from this rod and is free to rotate about it without friction. The vertical height of the plate is 45.0 cm. The plate is pulled to the right until it makes an angle of 28.0° from vertical and then released from rest. At the same time, a piece of clay is tossed at the plate, moving to the right. At the moment the plate reaches vertical, moving left, it collides with the clay. The piece of clay strikes the plate at its bottom edge, moving to the right perpendicular to the plate at the moment of impact. Its mass is 380 g and its speed just before impact is 160 cm/s. The clay sticks to the plate after impact. (a) What is the angular speed (in rad/s) of the plate the instant before it collides with the clay? - Two blocks are attached by strings of negligible mass to a pulley with two radii R1=0.29 m and R2=0.69 m. The strings are wrapped around their respective radii so that the blocks can move either up or down. The pulley has a moment of inertia about its center I=0.221 kg⋅m2, and is supported by a bearing with negligible friction. The moment of inertia of the turntable about this axis is 1200 kg · m2. You stand, barefooted, at the rim of the turntable and very slowly walk toward the center, along a radial line painted on the surface of the turntable. Your mass is 71.0 kg. Since the radius of the turntable is large, it is a good approximation to treat yourself as a point mass. Assume that you can maintain your balance by adjusting the positions of your feet. You find that you can reach a point 3.00 m from the center of the turntable before your feet begin to slip. These modules are rotating about their center of mass, which is at the center of the cable because the modules are identical. In each module, the cable is connected to a motor, so that the modules can pull each other together. The initial tangential speed of each module is v0 = 17.5 m/s. Then they pull together until the distance between them is reduced by a factor of five. Each module has a final tangential speed of vf. Find the value of vf.arrow_forward
