Interpretation:

On the basis of the structure, the higher boiling point ethylene glycol and 1propanol is to be identified.

Concept Introduction:

The boiling point of a substance is the temperature at which the vapour pressure of that substance becomes equal to the surrounding pressure. At the boiling point, the substance changes its state from liquid to vapour. The boiling point depends on the intermolecular forces present between the molecules of the liquid. The more the intermolecular forces present, the higher is the boiling point of the liquid. There are three types of intermolecular force present in liquid; named as: (a) London dispersion force (b) dipole-dipole force, and (c) hydrogen bonding force. The molecule which can form two hydrogen bonds simultaneously will have a very high boiling point.
