To review:
The conclusion based on the observation of two graphs depicting the photosynthetic activity.
Introduction:
Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is the microalgal species that are presently employed for the production of biofuels such as biodiesel, bioethanol, and biohydrogen. These organisms in the presence of full sunlight yield comparatively less amount of chemical energy, which, in turn, reduces the efficiency of photosynthesis. To overcome the reduced photosynthetic efficiency of C. reinhardtii, researchers engineered the organism by decreasing the size of antenna complexes used in the two photosystems. Comparisons of the photosynthetic activity and growth rate between this engineered strain and a control under high-light conditions are shown below.

- You performed an experiment on photosynthesis on Elodea, using bromothymol blue as an indicator forpH. Your two light conditions were red light and blue light. You found that in blue light, your solutionturned a nice cobalt blue, and in red light it turned green.a. What can you conclude about the efficiency of photosynthesis in Elodea regarding those twowavelengths?b. What would your conclusion be if your negative control (no Elodea in white light) turned greenalso?arrow_forwardThere are two photosystems involved in the light reaction of photosynthesis. Both take upenergy from the sun in the form of light.A. Where are the photosystems located and what is the name of the organelle? B. Where does the energy that the photosystems take up, go? Describe for eachphotosystem WHERE the energy ends up at the end of the light reactions. In otherwords, what products contain the energy from which photosystem at the end ofthe light reaction?arrow_forwardBoth temperature and light intensity can affect the rate of photosynthesis. However, in this study, the investigator kept the temperature constant and only studied how changes in light intensity affected the rate of photosynthesis, Which of the following best explains the investigator's decision to only study light intensity? Select one or more: a. It is easier to control light intensity than it is to regulate temperature, therefore the investigator chose to measure only light intensity b. Light intensity affects the rate of photosynthesis more than temperature, therefore the investigator chose to measure only light intensity c. none of the answers is correct d. If different light intensities and different temperatures had been studied at the same time, it would not be possible to know which of these factors affected the rate of photosynthesis.arrow_forward
- Suppose an experiment is performed in which plant I is supplied with normal carbon dioxide but with water that contains radioactive oxygen atoms. Plant II is supplied with normal water but with carbon dioxide that contains radioactive oxygen atoms. Each plant is allowed to perform photosynthesis, and the oxygen gas and sugars produced are tested for radioactivity. Which plant would you expect to produce radioactive sugars, and which plant would you expect to produce radioactive oxygen gas? Explain why.arrow_forwardWhich of the following is true of light-independent reactions of photosynthesis? Select all that apply. a. Light-independent reactions occur in the stroma. b. Water molecules are split during light-independent reactions. c. Chlorophyll absorbs energy from sunlight. d. Carbon dioxide is necessary for light-independent reactions.arrow_forwardIn the photosynthesis lab, a group of students found that in the blue light condition, there was a change in absorbance (ΔA620) of 0.324 in extracted spinach chloroplasts. The students later went on a hike and located a plant they had never seen before and were interested in how the photosynthesis rates would compare to their experiment with spinach chloroplasts. They extracted chloroplasts of the unknown green-leaved plant and exposed them to the same experimental conditions as before. The students calculated the ΔA620 to be 0.100. Which plant (spinach or unknown) has the highest rate of photosynthesis? Explain your answer using evidence, being sure to demonstrate your understanding of the dependent variable.arrow_forward
- Photosystems are essential for the photosynthetic reaction to be carried out. While in a group discussion, one of your friend told you that "Coordination between two photosystems are required for the completion of a successful photosynthetic event". Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Please provide valid scientific reasonings for your statement.arrow_forwardTo assess photosynthesis, we relied heavily on a spectrophotometer to measure the color intensity of DCPIP in our solution. We set the spectrophotometer at wavelengths in the visible spectrum. What is the approximate wavelength range (in nm) for the visible spectrum? For example, the ultraviolet spectrum wavelength range is approximately 10-400 nmarrow_forwardplease choose correct letter and explain why you choose it 1. Which of the following statements describes what cyclic and non-cyclic electron transport in chloroplasts have in common? a. They produce ATP. b. They produce NADPH. c. They both involve photosystem I and photosystem II. d. They produce both ATP and NADPH. e. They both use photosystem II only. 3. Which of the following statements describes what fluorescence and bioluminescence have in common? a. ATP provides the energy for both processes. b. Light provides the energy for both processes. c. Light is produced by a pigment in both processes. d. Both processes emit light. e. All of the abovearrow_forward
