Introduction:

The RBCs (red blood cells) are also called the erythrocytes. These cells are present in the highest number in the blood. Their number varies from 4 to 5 million in per mm3 (millimeter cube) of the blood. The cells are small and lack the nucleus. They are biconcave shaped and have a larger surface area as compared to their volume. These cells undergo anaerobic pathways for ATP (Adenosine triphosphate) generation and lack the mitochondria.
