Chapter 10, Problem 1cCP
Summary Introduction
To review:
Sensory adaptation in the olfactory and pain receptors.
Introduction:
Sensory adaptation is a process of response to stimuli received by sensory receptors. Underlying this adaptation, are the sensations of pain due to heat or smell due to bad odor. The response of olfactory receptors is generally phasic while, that of pain receptors is tonic. This helps the body to suitably respond to the environmental stimuli, in terms of fast adapting versus slow adapting.

Describe each of the following types of receptors, indicating what sensation it detects and giving an example of where it can be found in the body: pain receptors (nociceptors), temperature receptors, mechanoreceptors (including proprioceptors and barorceptors/pressoreceptors), chemoreceptors, and photoreceptors.
Compare and contrast general and special senses. Give two examples of each and describe the locations of the receptors that mediate these senses.
Describe the location, structure, and afferent pathways of smell and taste receptors, and explain how these receptors are activated.
