Introduction

Culture is a major factor in defining the roles of women and men, and transmitting those prescribed roles across generations. Nations do not usually have one set of roles for women because of diverse subcultures. Religions based on different interpretations of sacred texts often guide behavior expectations for all adherents and provide structure for daily actions. Problems emerge when women attempt to break free of restrictive mores, only to be met with scorn and disapprove from men as well as, in some cases, other women!
