The heart muscle cells are short and branched. They are uni-nucleate and are connected by intercalated discs. Heart main function is pumping and circulation of blood and maintenance of the blood pressure. To carry out these functions the heart muscle should be able to function as a whole, and this is achieved by a gap junction.
