Interpretation:
The structural formulas of the two stereoisomers formed by the photochemical chlorination of
Concept introduction:
Enantiomers have the same connectivity of the atoms, but they have different arrangement of the atoms in space. They contain chiral centers and they are non-superimposable mirror images of each other.
Diastereoisomers are the stereoisomers but they are not the enantiomers with each other.
When one chirality center is present a molecule with no element of symmetry is said to be chiral molecule.
The ratio of the monochlorination products depends on the type of hydrogen that is abstracted by the chlorine atom and the free radical that is formed.

- There are 17 possible alkene isomers with the formula C6H12. Draw structures of the five isomers in which the longest chain has six carbon atoms, and give the name of each. Are any of these isomers chiral? (There are also eight isomers in which the longest chain has five carbon atoms, and four isomers in which the longest chain has four carbon atoms. How many can you find?)arrow_forwardWhen HBr adds across the double bond of 1,2-dimethylcyclopentene, the product is a mixture of the cis and trans isomers. Show why this addition is not stereospecific.arrow_forward(5) For the formula of C5H12O, (a) show your calculation and determine the degrees of unsaturation present, and (b) draw four of the structural/constitutional isomers possible for the formula.arrow_forward
- Describe and explain the stereochemistry of 2-bromo-1-chloropropane molecule.arrow_forwardOrganic Chemistry HW: 2,6-dimethyloct-2-ene cannot be handwritten, please type or use a program to draw Chiral Carbons show the expanded structure of this molecule. Determine if this molecule contains any chiral carbons. If there are chiral carbons in the molecule, circle or highlight all of them. If your molecule does not contain any chiral carbons explain why none of the carbons are chiralarrow_forwardDraw the structural isomers of C2H4BrCl and identify which of them has a chiral center. Then, create the Newman projection of the most stable conformational isomer and indicate its absolute configuration.arrow_forward
- Explain why the bond dissociation enthalpy of a C-H bond in benzene is significantly greater than that in alkanesarrow_forward5. Explain with the aid of conformational structures why trans-1,2-dimethylcyclohexane is more stable than cis-1,2-dimethylcyclohexane, whereas the reverse order of stability is observed for the 1,3-isomer.arrow_forwardIf I chlorinate 2-bromo-1-chloropropane under light, how many products do I obtain? Are any chiral?arrow_forward
- DHA is a fatty acid derived from fish oil and an abundant fatty acid in vertebrate brains. Hydrogenation of DHA forms docosanoic acid [CH3(CH2)20CO2H], and ozonolysis forms CH3CH2CHO, CH2(CHO)2 (five equivalents), and HCOCH2CH2CO2H. What is the structure of DHA if all double bonds have the Z configuration?arrow_forwardDraw the structure of each molecule below and put an asterisk on each tetrahedral stereocenter. i) 3,4-dichlorohexane ii) 3-bromo-1-iodo-5-methylhexane iii) 3-bromo-2,4-dimethylpentanearrow_forwardHow many products of 2-hexene+Cl2 are therearrow_forward
