Chapter 10, Problem 39P

The figure shows a finger exerciser used by law-enforcement officers and athletes to strengthen their grip. It is formed by winding A227 hard-drawn steel wire around a mandrel to obtain 2 1 2 turns when the grip is in the closed position. After winding, the wire is cut to leave the two legs as handles. The plastic handles are then molded on, the grip is squeezed together, and a wire clip is placed around the legs to obtain initial “tension” and to space the handles for the best initial gripping position. The clip is formed like a figure 8 to prevent it from coming off. When the grip is in the closed position, the stress in the spring should not exceed the permissible stress.

  1. (a)   Determine the configuration of the spring before the grip is assembled.
  2. (b)   Find the force necessary to close the grip.

A helical spring is provided with a rigid plate at each end. A bolt passes through the spring and the end plates. By turning the nut, the spring is compressed until the coils touch. The height of the unloaded spring is 600 mm, its mean coil diameter is 100 mm and the diameter of the spring wire is 28 mm. The spring has 18 coils. The diameter of the bolt is 25 mm and the plates are each 25 mm thick. Calculate the elongation of the bolt when the spring is fully compressed as well as the stress in the spring wire (take E = 200 GPa and G = 80 GPa).
The figure below is a schematic drawing of a shaft that supports two V-belt pulleys. The loose belt tension on the pulley at A is 15% of the tension on the tight side. The shaft material has a yield strength of 300 MPa and an ultimate tensile strength of 520 MPa. Calculate the shaft diameter.
The system is made up of a bar, supported by a pin at point A and by a smooth collar at point B (the collar slides on the ABG bar). The collar is pinned to bar BDE, and bar BDE is supported by a pin at D and a cable at end E. Draw the bar BDR horizontaly and generate the cutting force diagram, flexing moment, show the max values of cutting force and flexing moment and its position . With T=26lb, a=4 in, b=9 in
