Chapter 10, Problem 7SA
Summary Introduction

To determine:

The reason that why the development of antiviral drugs is difficult.

Introduction:

Antimicrobial or antiviral drugs inhibit pathogens from causing diseases either by affecting their metabolism, causing damage to their cell membrane or inhibiting their nucleic acid synthesis. The property of an antiviral agent to inhibit viruses is selective. All antimicrobial agents are selectively toxic to the pathogens so that they do not harm the host. Selective toxicity is expressed in the form of therapeutic dose to treat a disease and the dose at which the drug could become toxic to the host.
