To explain: The reason that consumption of a large amount of carbon dioxide by living trees does not make much contribution in the reduction of global warming.
Concept introduction:
The earth’s surface has enormous amount of carbon. It moves through the biosphere in the processes mediated by photosynthetic plants on land and in sea. This is represented as the carbon cycle, which involves two main processes namely photosynthesis and respiration. The photosynthesis process involves fixation of atmospheric carbon in plants to form organic molecules such as sugars required for life processes. Respiration is the process through which carbon is returned to the atmosphere from dead plants in the form of carbon dioxide.

- Figure 5.7 On a hot, dry day, plants close their stomata to conserve Water. What impact will this have on photosynthesis?arrow_forwardScientific evidence indicates that the CO2 added to the air by the burning of wood and fossil fuels is contributing to global warming, a rise in global temperature. Tropical rain forests are estimated to be responsible for approximately 20% of global photosynthesis, yet the consumption of large amounts of CO2 by living trees is thought to make little or no net contribution to reduction of global warming.arrow_forwardTropical rainforest covers only about 3% of earth's surface, but they are estimated to be responsible for more than 20% of global photosynthesis. For this reason, rainforests are often referred to as the “lungs' ' of the planet, providing O2 for life all over earth. However, most experts believe that rainforests make little or no net contribution to global O2 production. From your knowledge of photosynthesis and cellular respiration, can you explain why they might think this? ( Hint: what happens to the energy stored as sugars in the body of a plant when that plant dies or parts of it are eaten by animals?)arrow_forward
- SUBJECT: GENERAL BIOLOGY 1 / CAM and C4 Photosynthesis Plant adaptation is varied among all organisms present on Earth’s fauna. Also, we can’t deny the fact that as time goes by, the amount of carbon rises making it more complicated for the rest of organisms to adapt and survive. In relation to their specialized features, predict how C4 and CAM plants will each respond to a doubling of the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere.arrow_forwardThe concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide has increased since the beginning of the industrial age. - The burning of fossil fuels releases CO2 into the atmosphereand is detrimental to the Earth’s ecosystems. Explain whythe use of biofuels, which also release CO2, is an improvement over fossil fuels.arrow_forwardDuring a La nifia event, the temperature of the Pacific Ocean near Central America becomes cooler than normal. As a result, more clouds form, and this can block sunlight from reaching plants in Central America forests. A researcher studying the effects of La nifia measured the amount of carbon dioxide ( CO,) uptake by tropical plants under different light intensities. The data are shown in the graph. Predict how a la nifia event effects the rate of photosynthesis by plants in the tropical forests of Central America. Provide evidence from the graph to support your prediction.
