Concept explainers
Suppose that a new company has five employees: Zamora. Agraharam. Smith, Chou, and Macintyre. Each employee will assume one of six responsibilities: planning, publicity, sales, marketing, development, and industry relations. Each employee is capable of doing one or more of these jobs: Zamora could do planning, sales, marketing, or industry relations; Agraharam could do planning or development; Smith could do publicity, sales, or industry relations; Chou could do planning, sales, or industry relations; and Macintyre could do planning, publicity, sales, or industry relations.
a) Model the capabilities of these employees using a bipartite graph.
b) Find an assignment of responsibilities such that each employee is assigned one responsibility.
c) Is the matching of responsibilities you found in part (b) a complete matching? Is it a maximum matching?

- A local consulting firm currently has 5 jobs that have to be completed by its contract employees. After analyzing the time that it would take each specific employee to complete each specific job, and, the wages each specific employee is paid per hour, it determined how much it would cost if specific employees were assigned to specific jobs. These costs were calculated to be: Cost ($) Job Employee 1 2 3 4 5 A 1,200 1,850 1,375 3,500 1,900 B 1,175 1,920 1,540 3,375 2,050 C 1,080 1,885 1,475 3,400 2,010 D 1,190 1,905 1,400 3,600 2,100 E 1,250 1,900 1,390 3,520 1,975 F 1,200 1,950 1,465 3,400 1,950 G 1,075 1,820 1,480 3,250 1,920 a. Atlanta needs at least 45 audio systems and Little Rock needs at least 32 audio systems. The company can send at most 126 audio systems to these assemply plants. It costs $30 per system to ship to Atlanta and $46 per system to ship to Little Rock. Atlanta gives the manufacturing company $20 in rebates toward its products for each audio system they buy, while Little Rock gives $15 in rebates. The manufacturer estimates they need at least $1500 in rebates to cover products they plan to buy from the two plants. How many audio systems should be shipped to each plant to minimize shipping costs. What is the minimum cost? Number of audio systems to ship to Atlanta: Number of audio systems to ship to Little Rock: Minimum cost: $arrow_forwardIn her last semester at SPC, Polly Hedron needs to take Statistics and Composition 2. The Raleigh plant manufactures 330 keyboards per week, whereas the Palo Alto plant produces 670. The company has stores in Chicago and Denver. The Chicago store orders 590 keyboards per week and the Denver store orders 410. The cost required to set up the production line to produce the 4-cylinder connecting rods is $2,400, and the cost required to set up the production line for the 6-cylinder connecting rods is $3,600. Manufacturing costs are $14 for each 4-cylinder connecting rod and $19 for each 6-cylinder connecting rod. If a production changeover is necessary from one week to the next, the weekend is used to reconfigure the production line. Once the line has been set up, the weekly production capacities are 5,000 6-cylinder connecting rods and 7,000 4-cylinder connecting rods. - A business has two types of employees - managers and workers. Managers earn either $100,000 or $200,000 a year. Workers earn either $10,000 or $20,000 a year. The number of male and female managers at each salary level are shown in the first table below. The number of male and female workers at each salary level are shown in the second table below. Managers $100,000 $200,000 Male 80 20 Female 20 30 Workers $10,000 $20,000 Male 30 20 Female 20 80 These tables are converted to row percentages below: Managers $100,000 $200,000 Male 80% 20% Female 40% 60% Workers $10,000 $20,000 Male 60% 40% Female 20% 80% Looking at the data, females make more money than males, within both employee types. For example, 60% of female managers are at the higher salary level, while only 20% of male managers are at this level. Also, 80% of female workers are at the higher salary level, while only 40% of males are at this level.
