Interpretation:
The plausible mechanism for given reaction has to be proposed.
Concept Introduction:
Ring-opening of
Acid-catalyzed ring-opening of epoxide: The epoxide ring is protonated and the nucleophile attack depends on the electronic or steric effect (nature of epoxide).
Crown ethers are cyclical chemical compounds that consist of a ring containing a number of ether groups. The resultant cations often variety salts that are soluble in nonpolar solvents, and for this reason crown ethers are helpful in phase transfer catalysis.

- Propose a synthesis for 18-crown-6. If a base is used in your synthesis, does it make a difference whether it is lithium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide? Explain.arrow_forwardTwo methods convert an alkyl halide into a carboxylic acid having one more carbon atom. (1] R-X + "CN R-CN R,COOH COOH (Section 22.18) + X- new C-C bond [1] CO2 RCOOH (Section 20.14) [2] H3O [2] R-X + Mg R-MgX Depending on the structure of the alkyl halide, one or both of these methods may be employed. For each alkyl halide, write out a stepwise sequence that converts it to a carboxylic acid with one more carbon atom. If both methods work, draw both routes. If one method cannot be used, state why it can't. Br a. CH,CI b. c. (CH3)3CCI d. HOCH,CH,CH,CH,Brarrow_forward2 An unknown compound X can be one the three compounds listed in the table below. She wanted to examine one physical property of compound Z respect to acidicity. Draw the possible strtural formulae for compounds Y and Z and identify their IUPAC name. Discuss why compound Z is less acidic than the acid chloride group. Outline how you would prepare compound Y in the laboratory.arrow_forwardFew drops of an unknown liquid are added to Tollen's reagent in a test tube. When p-Bromotoluene was mixed with dry ether, the mixture was warmed until the ether begins to boil (34.6 °C). When the reaction is almost complete, dry ice (3-4 mL in a beaker) was prepared and the mixture was poured into it. After some time, 5 mL of 6 N HCl was added. The solvent used for the recrystallization is 100 mL of 30% ethanol. The reaction equation is given on the figure. What is the actual yield? What is the theoretical yield?
