Interpretation:

The radiation exposure that is received by an average American from human activities and natural sources has to be contrasted.

Concept Introduction:

Radiation comes from natural source and artificial source.  Radiation cannot be felt, heard, smelt etc.  When a person is exposed to radiation, many harmful effects can occur depending upon the nature of the radiation.  Background radiation is the one that comes from natural sources.  The living organisms are continuously exposed to background radiation.
