Question
Chapter 11, Problem 11.75PAE
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
The meaning when a smoggy day is considered “beyond index” should be mentioned and it should be stated whether a U.S. city ever recorded an AQI beyond index.
Concept introduction:
- The AQI is an index for reporting daily air quality. It states about the cleanliness of air and if polluted; related health effects of concern. The AQI focusses on health effects which may be experienced within a few hours or days after breathing polluted air. AQI is calculated for five major air pollutants. They are,
- Ground level ozone
- Particulate matter
- Carbon monoxide
- Sulfur dioxide
- Nitrogen dioxide
The scale of AQI ranges from 0 to 500 and higher the AQI value, higher the effects which can be caused due to air pollution.
Word smog is derived from a combination of words, “smoke and fog”.
Although the scale AQI scale in the USA is not applied to all other countries, the values can be according to the country.

The world burns approximately 3.7 * 1012 kg of fossil fuel per year. Use the combustion of octane as the representative reaction and determine the mass of carbon dioxide (the most significant greenhouse gas) formed per year. The current concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is approximately 399 ppm (by volume). By what percentage does the concentration increase each year due to fossil fuel combustion? Approximate the average properties of the entire atmosphere by assuming that the atmosphere extends from sea level to 15 km and that it has an average pressure of 381 torr and average temperature of 275 K. Assume Earth is a perfect sphere with a radius of 6371 km.
