Concept explainers
At Symond Company production workers in the Painting Department are paid on the basis of productivity. The labor time standard for a unit of production is established through periodic time studies conducted by Douglas Management Consultants. In a time study the actual time required to complete a specific task by a worker is observed. Allowances are then made for preparation time, rest periods, and cleanup time. Bill Carson is one of several veterans in the Painting Department.
Bill is informed by Douglas that he will be used in the time study for the painting of a new product. The findings will be the basis for establishing the labor time standard for the next 6 months. During the test, Bill deliberately slows his normal work pace in an effort to obtain a labor time standard that will be easy to meet. Because it is a new product, the Douglas representative who conducted the test is unaware that Bill did not give the test his best effort.
Instructions

- Whitley Construction Company is in the home remodeling business. Whitley has three teams of highly skilled employees, each of whom has multiple skills involving carpentry, painting, and other home remodeling activities. Each team is led by an experienced employee who coordinates the work done on each job. As the needs of different jobs change, some team members may be shifted to other teams for short periods of time. Whitley uses a job costing system to determine job costs and to serve as a basis for bidding and pricing the jobs. Direct materials and direct labor are easily traced to each job using Whitley's cost tracking software. Overhead consists of the purchase and maintenance of construction equipment, some supervisory labor, the cost of bidding for new customers, and administrative costs. Whitley uses an annual overhead rate based on direct labor hours. Whitley has recently completed work for three clients: Harrison, Barnes, and Tyler. The cost data for each of the three jobs are…arrow_forwardCrow Design is an interior design firm. Three clerks who work during the day perform sundry accounting tasks; the two clerks who work in the evening are responsible for (1) collecting the cost data for the various jobs in process, (2) verifying manufacturing material and labor reports, and (3) supplying production reports to the supervisors by the next morning. The salaries of these two clerks who work at night should be classified as:   A) Period costs.   B) Direct costs.   C) Product costs.   D) Indirect costs.   E) Variable Costs.arrow_forward
- Dr. Alyx Hemmings is employed by Mesa Dental. Mesa Dental recently installed a computerized job-order costing system to help monitor the cost of its services. Each patient is assigned a job number when he or she checks in with the receptionist. The receptionist-bookkeeper notes the time the patient enters the treatment area and when the patient leaves the area. This differ-ence between the entry and exit times is the number of patient hours used and the direct labor time assigned to the dental assistant. (A dental assistant is constantly with the patient.) Thedirect labor time assigned to the dentist is 50 percent of the patient hours. (The dentist typically splits her time between two patients.) The chart filled out by the dental assistant provides additional data that is entered into the computer. For example, the chart contains service codes that identify the nature of the treat-ment, such as whether the patient received a crown, a filling, or a root canal. The chart not only…arrow_forwardTerri Ronsin had recently been transferred to the Home Security Systems Division of National Home Products. Shortly after taking over her new position as divisional controller, she was asked to develop the division’s predetermined overhead rate for the upcoming year. The accuracy of the rate is important because it is used throughout the year and any underapplied or overapplied overhead is closed out to Cost of Goods Sold at the end of the year. National Home Products uses direct labor-hours in all of its divisions as the allocation base for manufacturing overhead. To compute the predetermined overhead rate, Terri divided her estimate of the total manufacturing overhead for the coming year by the production manager’s estimate of the total direct labor-hours for the coming year. The company uses a job order cost system. Management is concerned about cost performance and evaluates the job cost sheets to learn more about the cost effectiveness of the operations. To facilitate a comparison, the cost sheet for Job 206 (50 backhoe buckets completed in October) was compared with Job 228, which was for 75 backhoe buckets completed in December. - Case Construction Company, a three-year-old business, provides contracting and construction services to a variety of clients. Given that each construction job is different from any other, company accountant Susan Kalagnanam decided that it was best to use a job- order costing system to allocate costs to the different jobs. She decided to use construction labour-hours as the basis for overhead allocation. In December 2020, she estimated the following amounts for the year 2021: Direct materials Construction labour. Overhead Construction labour-hours Kalagnanam recorded the following for the first quarter of 2021 for the three jobs that the company started and completed during the quarter: Direct materials $13,395,200 8,165,000 8,847,700 460,000 Construction labour-hours $753,500 School Residential Cinema $904, 200 $1,356,300 36,800 16,100 62,100 Required: 1.
