- Sand River Sales has a fork truck used in its warehouse operations. The truck had an original useful life of five years. However, after depreciating the asset for three years, the company makes a major repair that extends the life by four years. What is the remaining useful life after the major repair?arrow_forwardGrandorf Company replaced the engine in a truck for 8,000 and expects the new engine will extend the life of the truck two years beyond the original estimated life. Related information is provided below. Cost of truck 65,000 Salvage value 5,000 Original estimated life 6 years The truck was purchased on January 1, 20-1. The engine was replaced on January 1, 20-6. Using straight-line depreciation, compute depreciation expense for 20-6.arrow_forwardColquhoun International purchases a warehouse for $300,000. The best estimate of the salvage value at the time of purchase was $15,000, and it is expected to be used for twenty-five years. Colquhoun uses the straight-line depreciation method for all warehouse buildings. After four years of recording depreciation, Colquhoun determines that the warehouse will be useful for only another fifteen years. Calculate annual depreciation expense for the first four years. Determine the depreciation expense for the final fifteen years of the assets life, and create the journal entry for year five.arrow_forward
- Alfredo Company purchased a new 3-D printer for $900,000. Although this printer is expected to last for ten years, Alfredo knows the technology will become old quickly, and so they plan to replace this printer in three years. At that point, Alfredo believes it will be able to sell the printer for $15,000. Calculate yearly depreciation using the double-declining-balance method.arrow_forwardDuring the current year, Arkells Inc. made the following expenditures relating to plant machinery. Renovated five machines for $100,000 to improve efficiency in production of their remaining useful life of five years Low-cost repairs throughout the year totaled $70,000 Replaced a broken gear on a machine for $10,000 A. What amount should be expensed during the period? B. What amount should be capitalized during the period?arrow_forwardTo test your formulas, assume the machine purchased had an estimated useful life of three years (20,000, 30,000, and 50,000 hours, respectively). Enter the new information in the Data Section of the worksheet. Does your depreciation total 320,000 under all three methods? There are three common errors made by students completing this worksheet. Lets clear up two of them. One, an asset that has a three-year life should have no depreciation claimed in Year 4. This can be corrected using an =IF statement in Year 4. For example, the correct formula in cell C32 is =IF(B32D9,0,(D7D8)/D9) or =IF(B32D9, 0, SLN(D7, D8, D9)). You may wish to edit what you have already entered rather than retype it. Two, as mentioned in requirement 2, the double-declining-balance calculation needs to be modified in the last year of the assets life. Assuming you have already modified the formula for Year 4 (per instructions in step 2), alter the formula for Year 3 also. If you corrected any formulas, test their correctness by trying different estimated useful lives (between 3 and 8) in cell E9. Then reset the Data Section to the original values, save the revised file as DEPREC2, and reprint the worksheet to show the correct formulas. The third common error doesnt need to be corrected in this problem. The general form of the double-declining-balance formula needs to be modified to check the net book value of the asset each year to make sure it does not go below salvage value. =DDB does this automatically, but if you are writing your own formulas, this gets very complicated and is beyond the scope of the problem.arrow_forward
- Godwin Co. owns three delivery trucks. Details for each truck at the end of the most recent year follow: At the beginning of the year, a hydraulic lift is added to Truck 1 at a cost of 4,500. The addition of the hydraulic lift will allow the company to deliver much larger objects than could previously be delivered. At the beginning of the year, the engine of Truck 2 is overhauled at a cost of 5,000. The engine overhaul will extend the trucks useful life by three years. Write a short memo to Godwins chief financial officer explaining the financial statement effects of the expenditures associated with Trucks 1 and 2.arrow_forwardSt. Johns River Shipyards welding machine is 15 years old, fully depreciated, and has no salvage value. However, even though it is old, it is still functional as originally designed and can be used for quite a while longer. A new welder will cost 182,500 and have an estimated life of 8 years with no salvage value. The new welder will be much more efficient, however, and this enhanced efficiency will increase earnings before depreciation from 27,000 to 74,000 per year. The new machine will be depreciated over its 5-year MACRS recovery period, so the applicable depreciation rates are 20.00%, 32.00%, 19.20%, 11.52%, 11.52%, and 5.76%. The applicable corporate tax rate is 25%, and the project cost of capital is 12%. What is the NPV if the firm replaces the old welder with the new one?arrow_forwardUrquhart Global purchases a building to house its administrative offices for $500,000. The best estimate of the salvage value at the time of purchase was $45,000, and it is expected to be used for forty years. Urquhart uses the straight-line depreciation method for all buildings. After ten years of recording depreciation, Urquhart determines that the building will be useful for a total of fifty years instead of forty. Calculate annual depreciation expense for the first ten years. Determine the depreciation expense for the final forty years of the assets life, and create the journal entry for year eleven.arrow_forward
- During the current year, Arkells Inc. made the following expenditures relating to plant machinery. Renovated seven machines for $250,000 to improve efficiency in production of their remaining useful life of eight years Low-cost repairs throughout the year totaled $79,000 Replaced a broken gear on a machine for $6,000 A. What amount should be expensed during the period? B. What amount should be capitalized during the period?arrow_forwardMontezuma Inc. purchases a delivery truck for $15,000. The truck has a salvage value of $3,000 and is expected to be driven for eight years. Montezuma uses the straight-line depreciation method. Calculate the annual depreciation expense. After three years of recording depreciation, Montezuma determines that the delivery truck will only be useful for another three years and that the salvage value will increase to $4,000. Determine the depreciation expense for the final three years of the assets life, and create the journal entry for year four.arrow_forwardWhich of the following is not true about the MACRS depreciation system: A salvage value must be determined before depreciation percentages are applied to depreciable real estate. Residential rental buildings are depreciated over 27.5 years straight-line. Commercial real estate buildings are depreciated over 39 years straight-line. No matter when during the month depreciable real estate is purchased, it is considered to have been placed in service at mid-month for MACRS depreciation purposes.arrow_forward
