Question
Chapter 11, Problem 17QP
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
The substance with a higher boiling point is to be determined.
Concept introduction:
The various kinds of interactions that bind a molecule are known as intermolecular forces. These can be dispersion, dipole-dipole, ion-dipole, and hydrogen bonding.
The boiling point of a compound varies with the intermolecular forces and the molar mass of a substance. If there are strong intermolecular forces, the boiling point is high, and vice versa. The substance with a higher molar mass and a larger size has a higher boiling point.

Which member of each of the following pairs of substances would you expect to have a higher boiling
point?
(a) O2 and Cl2, (b) SO2 and CO2, (c) HF and HI
For each substance in the pair, list the forces between the formula units (IeFs for most, but IaFs for some!), compare their strength, and predict which has the higher m.p. or b.p:
SCl2 __________ <? b.p. >? SO2 __________
HF __________ <? m.p. >? LiF __________
The binary hydrogen compounds of the Group 4A elements and their boiling points are: CH4, –162ºC; SiH4, –112ºC; GeH4, –88ºC; and SnH4, –52ºC. Explain the increase in boiling points from CH4 to SnH4.
