Concept explainers
To discuss:
The differences between allele and gene.
Introduction:
The chromosomes can be defined as the condensed form of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) which coils around the proteins. The coiling of DNA around protein reduces the size of DNA and allows the packaging of DNA in a smaller region.
Explanation of Solution
Genes code for the genetic information and are located on chromosomes. Each gene in chromosome has a specific location, which is termed as a locus. However, all the genes have more than one copy and both the copies need not be identical in an organism. The differences between allele and gene are as follows:
Alleles | Genes |
The genes are segments of DNA coding for a particular trait. | The variants of a gene are known as the allele. |
A particular trait is determined by one gene most often. | The variations in the traits are brought by alleles of a gene. |
Genes are present in both haploid, diploid and multiploid organisms. | Alleles are not present in haploid organisms. |
Genes are found in individual units. | Alleles are found in a pair. |
Genes encode for an individual protein. | Alleles produce contrasting |
Genes are the segments of DNA, whereas, the contrasting forms of genes are alleles, gene codes for a particular trait and the variation are brought by alleles. Genes are present in all the organisms, whereas, alleles are present in multigenomic organisms only.
