Answer to Problem 1PP

Solution: A mixture of functional and substitutive class.

Explanation of Solution

The given names consist of two systems of nomenclature. These are functional class and substitutive systems. However, if functional class is considered, then the names are isopropyl alcohol and tert-butyl alcohol. On the other hand, if substitutive class is considered, then the compounds have the names as 2-propanol and 2-methyl-2-propanol. The names “isopropanol” and “tert-butanol” does not belong to any of these class. Hence, the use of such names is wrong.
