The nursing student is caring for a 17-year-old female patient Ms. W, who just arrived back to the United States after visiting her family in China. The patient got flu like symptoms and arrived in the emergency department. The patient had a fear of getting herself infected with the flu virus as she had read about the virus in newspapers and these viruses are currently spreading in Asia. The patient is trying to convince her by asking the student nurse that she only got some cold and not infected by the virus.    

Explanation of Solution

The nursing student must document the incident about the patient’s fears and it should be reported immediately to the physician. The patient must be isolated from other patient to avoid spreading of infection if she had the flu. The student nurse should do a quick research about the virus as she will gain more knowledge over the virus.

The student nurse is still not a Registered Nurse (RN) to become a nursing staff, who has knowledge over the communicable diseases and how to take immediate action if she encounters one. The nursing student still needs more knowledge to act in the emergency situations.

The nursing student still does not know much about the signs and symptoms of the virus, but she knows it is contagious. Hence, the nursing student recoiled herself when the patient sneezed.
