Interpretation:

By using chemical equations, the depletion of ozone in the stratosphere by the CFCs is to be explained.

Concept Introduction:

Ozone absorbs UV light, and thus protects the earth from its harmful effects.

CFCs are chlorofluorocarbons that are chemically inert.

Explanation of Solution

In the stratosphere, the UV light decomposes the CFCs in order to form chlorine atoms. The chlorine atom reacts with the ozone molecule present in the stratosphere to form chlorine monoxide and oxygen molecule. Another reaction that takes place in the stratosphere is the breaking of an ozone molecule into an oxygen molecule and an oxygen atom. The chlorine monoxide formed from CFCs combine with the oxygen atom to regenerate the chlorine atom.

Thus, overall, a chlorine atom destroys two molecules of ozone. This causes the depletion of the ozone layer.
