Chapter 11, Problem 34P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The structures for the products formed on reaction of 2,3-dimethyl-1,3-butadiene with each of the given reagents are to be written.

Concept introduction:

Conjugated dienes are hydrocarbons that two C=C units are joined by a single bond.

Electrophilic addition is the reaction that break the π bond and form new σ bond.

Catalytic hydrogenation is a stereospecific “syn” addition; both hydrogens add to the same face of the double bond.

Mixtures of 1,2- and 1,4- addition products are obtained if a diene reacts with chlorine or bromine.

The Diels-Alder reaction is the conjugate addition of an alkene (the dienophile) to a conjugated diene. It is concerted and stereospecific.

Ozonolysis (O3 in CH2Cl2) of compound A under reducing conditions (Zn /acetic acid) gives formaldehyde, 2-butanone, and compound B. Catalytic hydrogenation (H2/Pd) of A gives 2,7-dimethylnonane. 1. Compound A, C9H12, absorbs 3 equivalents of H2 on catalytic hydrogenation over palladium catalyst to give B, C9H18. On the treatment with acidic KMnO4, compound A gives among other things, a ketone that was identified as cyclohexanone. On reaction with NaNH2 in NH3, followed by addition of iodomethane, compound A gives a new hydrocarbon C, C10H14. What are the structures of A , B and C?
