Explanation of Solution

Write the expression for the position of wave at time t.

x=x0+vt (I)

Here, x is the position of the pulse at time t, x0 is the position of the pulse at t=0s , v is the speed of pulse and t is the time.

Use principle of superposition to sketch the shape of the cord for each instant.

Conclusion:

For t=0.60s.

Consider positive pulse. Initial position is 2m and velocity is 2.5m/s.

Substitute 0.60s for t, 2m for x0 and 2.5m/s for v in above equation to get x.

x=2m+(2.5m/s)(0.60s)=3.5m

Consider negative pulse. Initial position is 6m and velocity is 2.5m/s.

Substitute 0.60s for t, 2m for x0 and 2.5m/s for v in above equation to get x.

x=6m2.5m/s(0.60s)=4.5m

Therefore, shape of the cord at 0.60 is given below.

Physics, Chapter 11, Problem 40P , additional homework tip 4

For t=0.60s.

Consider positive pulse. Initial position is 2m and velocity is 2.5m/s.

Substitute 0.80s for t, 2m for x0 and 2.5m/s for v in above equation to get x.

x=2m+(2.5m/s)(0.80s)=4m

Consider negative pulse. Initial position is 6m and velocity is 2.5m/s.

Substitute 0.80s for t, 2m for x0 and 2.5m/s for v in above equation to get x.

x=6m2.5m/s(0.80s)=4m

Therefore, shape of the cord at 0.80 is given below.

Physics, Chapter 11, Problem 40P , additional homework tip 5

For t=0.90s.

Consider positive pulse. Initial position is 2m and velocity is 2.5m/s.

Substitute 0.90s for t, 2m for x0 and 2.5m/s for v in above equation to get x.

x=2m+(2.5m/s)(0.90s)=4.25m4.3m

Consider negative pulse. Initial position is 6m and velocity is 2.5m/s.

Substitute 0.90s for t, 2m for x0 and 2.5m/s for v in above equation to get x.

x=6m2.5m/s(0.90s)=3.753.8m

Therefore, shape of the cord at 0.90 is given below.

Physics, Chapter 11, Problem 40P , additional homework tip 6

Therefore, the shape of the cord at 0.60 is given below.

Physics, Chapter 11, Problem 40P , additional homework tip 7

The shape of the cord at 0.80 is given below.

Physics, Chapter 11, Problem 40P , additional homework tip 8

The shape of the cord at 0.90s is given below.
