Summary Introduction

To review:

The information provided by the sample of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and what insight it can give into possible pathology.

Introduction:

A spinal tap is a procedure that is performed when a physician needs to evaluate the CSF (cerebrospinal fluid) of the patient. The CSF, produced by ependymal cells in the ventricles of the brain, is the liquid that is present in the brain and spinal cord. It serves to protect the brain and spinal cord from trauma and provides nutrients to the nervous system and helps in the removal of waste products.
