Interpretation:
The change in a blood cell when placed in pure water is to be explained.
Concept Introduction:
Blood solution is an isotonic solution as the concentration of the dissolved solute and red blood cells and are the same in it. A blood solution may also have more or less solute concentration as compared to the red blood cells. When the solute concentration is more than red blood cells in a blood solution, it is called hypertonic while when the solute concentration is less than red blood cells, it is called hypotonic. For both hypertonic and hypotonic blood solutions, water may leave or enter the red blood cells, depending on the solute concentration, via osmosis. Osmosis is a process in which the transfer of the solvent particles takes place through a barrier that restricts the passage of the solute particles.

INTOR TO CHEMISTRY LLF
- Every pure substance has a definite and fixed set of physical and chemical properties. A solution is prepared by dissolving one pure substance in another. Is it reasonable to expect that the solution will also have a definite and fixed set of properties that are different from the properties of either component? Explain your answer.arrow_forwardA solution is defined as a homogeneous mixture. Is a small sample of air a solution? Is the atmosphere a solution?arrow_forwardDescribe the changes that occur between the time excess solute is placed into water and the time the solution becomes saturated.arrow_forward
- n oil spill spreads out on the surface of water, rather than dissolving in the water. Explain why.arrow_forwardCooking A cook prepares a solution for boiling by adding12.5 g of NaCl to a pot holding 0.750 L of water. Atwhat temperature should the solution in the pot boil?Use Table 14.5 for needed data.arrow_forward6-21 Are mixtures of gases true solutions or heterogeneous mixtures? Explain.arrow_forward
- Ammonium chloride is a strong electrolyte. Draw a molecular-level picture of this substance after it dissolves in water.arrow_forwardIn the lab, you dissolve 179 g of MgCl2 into1.00 L of water. Use Table 14.6 to find the freezing pointof the solution.arrow_forwardIn your own words, explain why (a) seawater has a lower freezing point than fresh water. (b) salt is added to the ice in an ice cream maker to freeze the ice cream faster.arrow_forward
