Question
Chapter 1.12, Problem 26P
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
The chemical equation for proton transfer from hydrogen chloride to the given compound is to be written and acid, base, conjugate base, and conjugate acids are to be identified.
Concept introduction:
According to Bronsted-Lowry theory, an acid is a proton donor and base is proton acceptor.
The proton transfer occurs in an acid and a base reaction.
The unshared electron pair of the base remove a proton from acid. The base is converted into its conjugate acid, and the acid which proton donor is converted into conjugate base.
An acid and its conjugate base differs by a single proton while a base and its conjugate acids differ by a single proton.
