Chapter 11.4, Problem 11PSC
To determine

Toprove : The area of any quadrilateral with perpendicular diagonals equals half the product of the diagonals

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark

Explanation of Solution

Given information :

A quadrilateral with diagonals

Formula used :

Area of triangle = 12×base×height

Proof :

From the figure given, we have

Area of ABCD= Areas of [ triangles AEB+AED+ BEC + BED]

Now,

Area of triangle AEB = 12×yw

Area of triangle AED = 12×yx

Area of triangle BEC = 12×zw

Area of triangle CED = 12×zx

Area of ABCD = (12×yw)+(12×yx)+(12×zw)+(12×zx)

  =12[w(y+z)+x(y+z)]=12[(w+x)(y+z)]

Hence proved
