Chapter 11.4, Problem 2JC
Recall the experiment about gastric freezing, an old method for treating peptic ulcers that you read about in the first Just Checking. Doctors would insert an inflatable bladder down the patient’s esophagus and into the stomach and then pump in a cold liquid. A major insurance company now states that it doesn’t cover this treatment because “double-blind, controlled clinical trials” failed to demonstrate that gastric freezing was effective.
- a) What does it mean that the experiment was double-blind?
- b) Why would you recommend a placebo control?
- c) Suppose that researchers suspected that the effectiveness of the gastric freezing treatment might depend on whether a patient had recently developed the peptic ulcer or had been suffering from the condition for a long time. How might the researchers have designed the experiment?

In a recent submission to a Joint Select Committee of Parliament, the National Consumers' League said “In reality, cow’s milk especially processed cow’s milk, has been linked to a variety of health problems, including: mucous production, haemoglobin loss, childhood diabetes, heart disease, arteriosclerosis, arthritis, kidney stones, mood swings, depression, irritability, allergies.” Researchers know this to be true, though the Committee rejected the submission. Suppose that 34% of the population has mood swings, allergies, irritability and depression (MAID) and is known to consume dairy products. Also, 80% of the populace consumes dairy products. Suppose a randomly chosen dairy products user is tested, what is the probability this person has MAID?

Is injecting medical cement effective in reducing pain for people who have suffered fractured vertebrae? A paper describes an experiment to compare patients who underwent vertebroplasty (the injection of cement) to patients in a placebo group who underwent a fake procedure in which no cement was actually injected. Because the placebo procedure was similar to the vertebroplasty procedure except for the actual injection of cement, patients participating in the experiment were not aware of which treatment they received.
All patients were asked to rate their pain at three different times—3 days, 14 days, and 1 month after the procedure. Summary statistics are given in the accompanying table.

Angioplasty is a medical procedure in which an obstructed blood vessel is widened. In some cases, a wire mesh tube, called a stent, is placed in the vessel to help it remain open. A study was conducted to compare the effectiveness of a bare metal stent with one that has been coated with a drug designed to prevent reblocking of the vessel. A total of 5329 patients received bare metal stents, and of these, 830 needed treatment for reblocking within a year. A total of 1125 received drug-coated stents, and 146 of them required treatment within a year. Can you conclude that the proportion of patients who needed retreatment differs between those who received bare metal stents and those who received drug-coated stents? Let p1 denote the proportion of patients with bare metal stents who needed retreatment and p2 denote the proportion of patients with drug-coated stents who needed retreatment. Use the α=0.10 level of significance and the P-value method with the TI-84 Plus calculator.
