Removing nitrogen from toxic wastewater. Highly toxic wastewater is produced during the manufacturing of dry-spun acrylic fiber One way to lessen toxicity is to remove the nitrogen from the wastewater. A group of environmental engineers investigated a promising method—called anaerobic ammonium oxidation—for -nitrogen removal and reported the results in the Chemical Engineering Journal (April 2013). A sample of 120 specimens of toxic wastewater was collected and each specimen was treated with the nitrogen removal method. The amount of nitrogen removed (measured in milligrams per liter) was determined, as well as the amount of ammonium (milligrams per liter) used in the removal process. These data (simulated from information provided in the journal article) are saved in the file The data for the first 5 specimens are shown below. Consider a simple linear
- a. Assess statistically, the adequacy of the fit of the linear model, Do you recommend using the model for predicting nitrogen amount?
- a. b Find a 95% prediction interval for nitrogen amount when amount of ammonium used is 100 milligrams per liter Practically interpret the result (41.9. 77 9)
- b. Will a 95% confidence interval for the mean nitrogen amount when amount of ammonium used is 100 milligrams per liter be wider or narrower than the interval, part b? Verify your answer by finding the 95% confidence interval for the mean. Narrower
- c. Will a 90% confidence interval for the mean nitrogen amount when amount of ammonium used is 100 milligrams per liter be wider or narrower than the interval, part c? Verify your answer by finding the 90% confidence interval for the mean. Narrower (first 5 observations of 120 shown)

- According to the article “Rubbing Hands Together Under Warm Air Dryers Can Counteract Bacteria Reduction” (Infectious Disease News, September 22, 2010) washing your hands isn’t enough—good “hand hygiene” also includes drying hands thoroughly. The article described an experiment to compare bacteria reduction for three different hand-drying methods. In this experiment, subjects handled uncooked chicken for 45 seconds, then washed their hands with a single squirt of soap for 60 seconds, and then used one of the three hand-drying methods. After completely drying their hands, the bacteria count on their hands was measured. Suppose you want to carry out a similar experiment and that you have 30 subjects who are willing to participate. Describe a method for randomly assigning each of the 30 subjects to one of the hand drying methods (Select all that apply) 1)Choose two treatments and sort the subjects by gender. Then assign the men to one treatment and the woment to another treatment.…arrow_forwardOne effect of the pesticide DDT upon birds is to inhibit the production of the enzyme carbonic anhydrase, which controls calcium metabolism. It is believed that this causes eggshells to be thinner and weaker than normal and makes the eggs more prone to breakage. An experiment was conducted where 16 sparrow hawks were fed a mixture of 3 ppm dieldrin and 15 ppm DDT (a combination often found in contaminated prey). The first egg laid by each bird was measured, and the mean shell thickness was found to be 0.19 mm. A “normal” eggshell has a mean thickness of 0.2 mm. Suppose a hypothetical study is done for a different primate species, with one group given a resveratrol supplement and the other group given a placebo. We wish to see if there is evidence that resveratrol increases the mean metabolism rate for this species. (This exercise presents hypothetical data. We will see the results from the actual study later in this chapter.) (2021) on SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes Covid-19) is available on medRxiv as a preprint. It analyzes the ability of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine to neutralize the Omicron variant in comparison to the ancestral strain (the original identified in Wuhan in 2019). In the study, they looked at five blood samples from donors that had the two Pfizer shots in addition to a Covid-19 infection. They analyzed these samples to find the geometric mean titer of neutralizing antibody – for which higher values correlate with a higher neutralization response – for both Omicron and the ancestral strain. NOTE: the trends seen in this study mirror those seen in a study by Pfizer-BioNTech that looked at blood sample from donors who had two shots plus a booster. Below is the data: 10. What type of study is this? a. Paired b. Two-Sample Independent 11. We would like to test if there is a mean difference between the type of variant. The younger Neotropical termites secrete a liquid that lacks the blue component, so it is white in appearance. In an experiment that measured the toxicity of the blue substance, the researchers placed one drop of either the blue liquid or the white liquid on individuals of a second termite species, Labiotermes labralis. Of the 41 Labiotermes labralis that got the blue drop, 37 were immobilized. Of the 40 Labiotermes labralis that got the white drop, 9 were immobilized. Is the blue liquid toxic compared to the white liquid?arrow_forward
- Toxic Mushrooms? Cadmium, a heavy metal, is toxic to animals. Mushrooms, however, are able to absorb and accumulate cadmium at high concentrations. The Czech and Slovak governments have set a safety limit for cadmium in dry vegetables at 0.5 part per million (ppm). M. Melgar et al. measured the cadmium levels in a random sample of the edible mushroom Boletus pinicola and published the results in the paper “Influence of Some Factors in Toxicity and Accumulation of Cd from Edible Wild Macrofungi in NW Spain” (Journal of Environmental Science and Health, Vol. B33(4), pp. 439–455). A hypothesis test is to be performed to decide whether the mean cadmium level in Boletus pinicola mushrooms is greater than the government’s recommended limit. a. determine the null hypothesis. b. determine the alternative hypothesis. c. classify the hypothesis test as two tailed, left tailed, or right tailed.arrow_forwardIn immune.xlsx, some individuals received a treatment of carotenoids (CAROT) and some received no treatment (NO). Carotenoids belong to a class of molecules called isoprenoids, many of them are antioxidants and some of them are vitamins such as vitamin A and its precursor beta-carotene, which is found in carrots. Because of the antioxidant properties of carotenoids the purpose of the study was to check if they have any effect on immunity. The column PHA gives quantitative measuremenst of cell-mediated immunity and the column SRBC gives quantitative measurements of humoral immunity. This is clearly a two-sample (non-paired) design. Therefore, you need to perform a Mann-Whitney-U test to check for differences. Bear in minds that rank assignments in Excel can be quite tricky and, therefore, if you need to do a Mann-Whitney rank assignment it is probably best to do this by hand. 1) What is the rank sum of the PHA data of the individuals, which received carotenoids and what is the…arrow_forwardIn immune.xlsx, some individuals received a treatment of carotenoids (CAROT) and some received no treatment (NO). - Vitamin D is important for maintaining strong bones by helping the body absorb calcium from food and sup-plements. The recommended amount of vitamin D is 400 IU (international units) per day. Many people take vitamin D supplements, often at levels greatly exceeding the recommended daily amount. What is the effect of taking too much vitamin D? Researchers investigated this in a double-blind randomized clinical trial. Subjects were divided into three groups. One, consisting of 109 subjects, took 400 IU per day for three years. second group, consisting of 100 subjects, took 4,000 IU per day for three years. A third group, consisting of 102 subjects, took 10,000 IU per day for three years. The total volumetric bone mass density of the tibia (the large bone located in the lower front portion of the leg, sometimes referred to as the shinbone) was measured in order to assess the effect of the different dosages of Vitamin D.11 The degrees of freedom for the ANOVA F statistic comparing the mean…arrow_forwardIn an observational study, it was noticed that people that eat more chocolate tend to have better blood flow than the general population. Researchers wonder whether the improved blood flow might be caused by flavanols (a molecule found in many foods). Dark chocolate contains a high concentration of flavanols, but milk chocolate contains a much lower concentration. How could the researchers design an experiment to determine the effects of flavanol on blood flow from the different types of chocolate?arrow_forwardA deficiency of the trace element selenium in the diet can negatively impact growth, immunity, muscle and neuromuscular function, and fertility.
