Interpretation:
In Alaska, the natural gas that can be kept in outdoor storage tank in winter, has to be identified.
Concept Introduction:
The natural form of a substance and its changes from one phase to another, depends on the physical properties like melting and boiling points which correspond to the
intermolecular forces that are acting between the molecules of the substance.
The stronger the intermolecular forces, the greater will be the boiling and melting points whereas if the intermolecular forces are weaker, the lower will be the melting and boiling points.
The intermolecular forces existing in the given compounds, are the dispersion forces.
Dispersion forces: The electronic distribution in one molecule induces an instantaneous dipole moment in it. This instantaneous dipole moment in each molecule creates a temporary dipole moment among the surrounding molecules. Such an interaction is known as the dispersion force.
