Bullying is a big problem that is getting harder to address as it moves online. Cyberbullying is invisible to adults in the victim's life unless they monitor social media behavior or the victim informs them of the treatment they are receiving. Sociology can help point out causes and potential remedies, but only after the bully is identified and caught. Sociology more effectively addresses societal and macro level causes of bullying.

Bullying has likely been a problem as long as unequal power structures have existed. Modern versions focus more often on social media, which can amplify the shame and embarrassment felt by victims. Cyberbullying is harder for adults to address unless they closely monitor the online behavior of their children. Some children have even been bullied to the point of committing suicide. Sociological studies can discover larger causes for bullying behavior in family social structures, and society level reinforcements of similar behavior such as competition and rugged individualism. These studies are less effective at finding strategies to stop bullying once it has begun, they are better at prevention, but only if the family of the bully seeks help. They often do not seek help, though, because one or both parents may also be bullies, and see no problem unless their child's behavior rises to the level of law enforcement intervention.
