The 1952 film Hans Christian Andersen stars Danny Kaye as the Danish writer of fairy tales. In a scene outside a schoolhouse window. Kaye sings a song to an inchworm. Inchworm was written for the film by the composer Frank Loesser and has been recorded by many artists, including Paul McCartney and Kenny Loggins. It was once featured on an episode of The Muppets and sung by Charles Aznavour.
As Kaye sings the song, the children in the school room are heard chanting addition facts:
and so on.

- The average age of the students in Class A is more than 11 years old. If ten out of the eleven students are 11 years old, which of the following could be the age of the remaining student?arrow_forwardThe downtown core of Gotham City consists of one-way streets, and the traffic flow has been measured at each intersection. She recruited 60 high school students and divided them into three groups. Group A listened to a 5-minute piece of music intended to make them feel happy (“Happy” by Pharrell). Group B listened to a 5-minute piece ofmusic intended to make them feel sad (a song titled “Home Is Such a Lonely Place” by Blink-182). Group Clistened to no music and instead was asked to sit quietly for 5 minutes (thought to make them feel neutral). When a participant would come to her laboratory, Dr. Lonsbary would greet the participant and then ask him orher to roll a six-sided die. Participants who rolled a 1 or 2 were assigned to Group A. Participants who rolled a 3 or 4 were assigned to Group B. Participants who rolled a 5 or 6 were assigned to Group C. The participants were then given an unlabeled CD to listen to based on their group assignment. The CD contained either the song selection or5 minutes of silence. They were…arrow_forwardIn a popular tale of wizards and witches, a group of them finds themselves in a room with doors which change position, making it impossible to determine which door is which when the room is entered or reentered. Suppose that there are 4 doors in the room. One door leads out of the building after 2.5 hours of travel. The second and third doors return to the room after 4 and 3 hours of travel, respectively. The fourth door leads to a dead end, the end of which is a 2 hour trip from the door. If the probabilities with which the group selects the four doors are 0.2, 0.2, 0.2, and 0.4, respectively, what is the expected number of hours before the group exits the building?arrow_forward
- this explanation is clear, but I have not understood how this relates to one step above the red underlined portion in the steparrow_forwardDr. Barton hypothesizes that if 1st grade students are assigned to practice sight word flashcards for 10 minutes every day for their first semester, they will end up reading more books in their second semester. She creates two groups of 25 students each and gives each group the same sight word flashcards. Group A is assigned to practice with the flashcards for 10 minutes every day for their first semester. Group B is not given this assignment. Each group is tasked with keeping a reading log during their second semester. At the end of 1st grade, Dr. Barton counts how many books each group has read. Group A read 68 books, and Group B read 92 books. The control group is: The independent variable is: The dependent variable is: This study shows that there is a positive correlation between 10 minutes of daily flashcard practice of sight words and the amount of books read. - Dr. Stewart is a veterinarian who says only dogs and cats. In each appointment, she may or may not get the animal vaccine. The two way frequency table summarizes Dr. Stewart’s 80 appointment last weekarrow_forwardsuppose Tina is throwing a surprise party to celebrate her friend Trevor's birthday, and she asks her good friend Tom to help with the music. The two agree to create a joint song playlist for Trevor to listen to during the car ride to the party. Tina chooses to add 15 songs to the playlist, and Tom chooses to add 11 songs. Suppose the playlist they created is significantly too long, and the car ride will only last long enough for the three to hear seven of the songs on the playlist. Also, suppose that each time a song is selected to be played, it is randomly selected from the remaining songs without replacement. After careful consideration, Tina is a little worried about Tom's song choices and hopes that Trevor will not hear too many of his songs. Let ? be the random variable representing the number of Tom's songs that are played during the car ride. Calculate the probability that Trevor will hear zero, one, or two of Tom's song choices.
