Concept explainers
A small copy center uses five 500-sheet boxes of copy paper a week. Experience suggests that usage can be well approximated by a normal distribution with a mean of five boxes per week and a standard deviation of one-half box per week. Two weeks are required to fill an order for letterhead stationery. Ordering cost is $2, and annual holding cost is 20 cents per box.
a. Determine the economic order quantity, assuming a 52-week year.
b. If the copy center reorders when the supply on hand is 12 boxes, compute the risk of a stockout.
c. If a fixed interval of seven weeks instead of an ROP is used for reordering, what risk does the copy center incur that it will run out of stationery before this order arrives if it orders 36 boxes when the amount on hand is 12 boxes?

EBK OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT
- Annual demand for a product is 11,440 units; weekly demand is 220 units with a standard deviation of 80 units. The cost of placing an order is $85, and the time from ordering to receipt is four weeks. The annual inventory carrying cost is $0.65 per unit. a. To provide a 99 percent service probability, what must the reorder point be? (Use Excel's NORMSINV() function to find the correct critical value for the given α-level. Do not round intermediate calculations. Round "z" value to 2 decimal places and final answer to the nearest whole number.) What is the reorder point? ______________ b. Suppose the production manager is told to reduce the safety stock of this item by 90 units. If this is done, what will the new service probability be? (Use Excel's NORMSDIST() function to find the correct probability for your computed Z-value. Round your answer to the nearest whole number.) What is the service probability? _________arrow_forwardGroundz coffee shop uses 4 pounds of a speciality tea weekly; each pound cost $16.
