(a)
To explain do you think the proposed sampling method is appropriate.
(a)
Answer to Problem 36E
No, it is not.
Explanation of Solution
It is given the sampling method in which we want to know if there is neighbourhood support to turn a vacant lot into a playground. Thus, they spend a Saturday afternoon going door to door in the neighbourhood asking people to sign a petition. Thus, we think that the proposed sampling method is not appropriate because the respondents are all people who are signing the petition which implies that they support turning the lot into a playground.
(b)
To explain do you think the proposed sampling method is appropriate.
(b)
Answer to Problem 36E
No, it is not.
Explanation of Solution
It is given the sampling method in the question that we want to know if students at our college are satisfied with the selection of food available on campus. So, they go to the largest cafeteria and interview every tenth person in line. Thus, we can say that this is not appropriate because most of the people in line are probably those that enjoy the cafeteria food and this survey would not accurately capture a representative sample (the people who do not enjoy the cafeteria food.)
